Collateral
The month of May often means a few things in life: better weather, longer days and the start of blockbuster movie season. But to college students, May represents the last academic hurdle before summer time – Final Exams. For the Graphic Design program at University of Hawaii at Manoa, this years graduates (Design: Production Techniques – ART 467) hosted a show of their collective output for public display.
Collateral is a collaborative showcase of student work under the instruction of Assistant Professor Chae Ho Lee. As the course title suggests, production techniques are in full effect, as students were tasked with building functional books, websites, sellable goods, and various other projects. In February, I was invited as a guest speaker to discuss our work at ASWS and the challenges of Hawaii’s design industry. It was a privilege to interact with such a group of talented young designers coming up in Hawaii. Their work was inspirational and refreshing to experience. Congratulations are in order.
The featured designers are: Michelle Ann Carino, Adine Close, John Bennet Cruz, Jennifer Garcia, Kelsey Ige, Hao In Kuan, and Yonghao Yan.
Below are few pictures from the show, Visit the project site for links to their personal work.

Collateral is defined as “belonging to the same ancestral stock but not in a direct line descent” and aptly describes the work presented in this presentation of design work. The process of design requires many trials, multiple iterations, and countless ideas in order to create a finished product. The work displayed within Collateral marks the culmination of not only a class experience but seven individual journeys.
